[March 2021] Celebrating our 80+ Treasures

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

By Sandee Furuta

For many years, Centenary has celebrated those members turning 80 and above. We have a special service, potluck and short program. This year, because our services are virtual and we cannot gather for a potluck, Judy Asazawa suggested that we come up with a way to celebrate these important members.

Michele Nagata was enlisted to make the beautiful cards she hand made. Along with the card, we thought it would be nice to deliver something in place of the potluck. A box of celebration manju was decided! Working with Fugetsu-do in Little Tokyo, boxes were ordered. We wanted to support the businesses in Little Tokyo and in return, Fugetsu-do gave us a discount!

Eleven people volunteered to deliver the gifts to 43 treasured members around the LA area. Drivers went from Burbank and Sherman Oaks in the north to Lake Forest and Ladera Ranch in the south... and all points in between! The recipients were happy to receive the treats and visit with their delivery people! Those delivering were able to meet people they had not known before and spread some Centenary joy. It was a great experience for all involved!

Thank you to the organizers and delivery people: Judy Asazawa, Michele Nagata, Robert and Gail Nishinaka, Cynthia and Josh Nishinaka, June Yamaki, Susan and Randy Onishi, Terry Sonoda Miyashiro, Victor and Cynthia Lew, France Wong, Todd Sasaki, Deanne Kim, Sandee Furuta

Blessings! Sandee Furuta
